What makes Pre-planning Solutions different?
Pre-planning Solutions is neither part of nor associated with any funeral home. That means we offer you independent and unbiased advice to help you make the best decisions.

How much does a funeral cost?
It depends completely on the services and goods you choose. Sheila at Pre-planning Solutions compares funeral home offerings for you, advises you on where you can get the best value for your money, and provides you with a wide range of financial options.

Will funerals be subject to the new HST (Harmonized Sales Tax)?
Yes. Today, funerals are subject to GST but not PST. Effective July 1, 2010, funerals will be instead subject to the new HST, which means that funeral costs will increase by 8%. However, anyone who pays for funeral services, including a pre-paid funeral contract or a burial plot, before July 1, 2010, will pay GST only.

How does funeral pre-planning work?
There are 2 parts: pre-arranging the funeral plan and pre-paying the cost. Sheila guides you through the available options to help you decide on a funeral plan that meets your needs and budget. You then enter into a contract with the funeral home you selected. Sheila reviews your contract with you to make sure you understand the terms.

Aren’t all funeral homes offering the same services for roughly the same price?
No. There can be great differences in both costs and services provided. For example, merchandise, such as urns and caskets, is available from many suppliers, making it challenging to compare differences in quality and product. Sheila at Pre-planning Solutions knows the services, has the comparisons, and walks you through the differences.

How much does Pre-planning Solutions charge?
Nothing. Our services are free, and you are not obligated to proceed with any of our recommendations.

If Pre-planning Solutions doesn’t charge me for its services, how do they make money?
The insurance company that holds your pre-paid funeral deposit pays Pre-planning Solutions a commission in return for the business. Funeral homes are paid in the same way for pre-arranging.

Is the cost of the goods and services I select guaranteed?
It depends on the funeral home. Any guarantee will be clearly stated in your contract with the funeral home. Sheila walks you through all the differences between funeral homes and helps you make informed decisions.

How does a pre-paid funeral contract work?
It lists all the goods and services you chose, and their cost at the time you sign the contract. At the time of death, the funeral home recalculates the cost at current prices. The funeral home applies the proceeds from the insurance policy to the cost of the goods and services it provides. If the contract was guaranteed, there will not be any further charges.

What happens to the money I pay to Pre-planning Solutions?
We are legally required to hold your pre-paid deposit in a life insurance policy that’s registered in your name. The policy proceeds are directed to the funeral home you choose to cover your funeral costs. Sheila is a Licensed Funeral Director and a Licensed Life Insurance Provider. She can clearly explain your options.

What happens if I move?
Pre-planning Solutions will help you:

  1. Choose a reputable funeral home in your new location, and
  2. Transfer your pre-paid funeral arrangements.

Because Pre-planning Solutions uses the same insurance company as hundreds of funeral homes across Canada, it can simply redirect your pre-paid funds.

Are there any tax advantages to pre-paying for my funeral?
Yes. Similar to a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), the Canada Revenue Agency allows interest to grow tax free in your pre-paid funeral plan. Sheila can explain the details. See also the question about the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) that will come into force in 2010.

I don’t want to go into a funeral home, and I especially don’t want to choose a casket. Can I simply put my wishes on file and set money aside to pay for them?
Yes. Many people want their wishes known, but don’t want their information on file with a funeral home. That’s okay. We appreciate that walking into a funeral home can be an overwhelming experience. Sheila meets with you to discuss the basics, and makes sure adequate funds are available to cover the costs. You can do everything in the convenience of your home, without ever entering a funeral home.
